TO: THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF SIR DEMETRIO L. HILBERO, KGCR
PAST SUPREME COMMANDER (1994-1995)
MEMBER, COUNCIL OF ELDERS

The untimely demise of our distinguished Knight SIR DEMETRIO L. HILBERO, KGCR, the pride of Calamba, Laguna is indeed a great loss to the Order. We will sorely miss a very honorable, highly-committed and loving Knight. His record of achievements as Chapter Commander of Calamba Chapter, Regional Commander for Southern Tagalog, PAST SUPREME COMMANDER (1994-1995) and MEMBER of the COUNCIL OF ELDERS brought extraordinary pride and honor to the Knights of Rizal.

His exemplary dedication in various civic, community and patriotic organizations is very inspiring and worthy to be given distinct honor. During his terms as Supreme Commander of the Order, 33 new chapters were founded, 23 in the Philippines and 9 in Canada and the United States. He likewise, remodeled the offices of the Knights of Rizal’s International Headquarters allowing several functions to be held there and also adding the elevator which is a big help to efficiently conduct day-to-day operations in the Order. For his dedicated exemplary service and leadership, he was awarded the highest honor in the Order, the Rizal Pro Patria Award on April 23, 1996.

He served the Order for many years. He was a recipient of various distinguished awards and decorations among which are testimonials of appreciation and recognition from the Municipal Council of Calamba, the IBP of Laguna, the Calamba Jaycees, the Letran-Calamba Association and the Kiwanis Club of Calamba.

His passing away is a great loss but his memory of selfless dedication and chivalry will live forever!

TO: THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF
SIR DEMETRIO L. HILBERO, KGCR
PAST SUPREME COMMANDER (1994-1995)
MEMBER, COUNCIL OF ELDERS

WE HEARD WITH GREAT LOSS THE UNTIMELY DEMISE OF OUR BELOVED SIR DEMETRIO L. HILBERO, KGCR, A PROMINENT SON OF CALAMBA, LAGUNA. THE ORDER HAS LOST A VERY ABLE, COMMITTED AND DISTINGUISHED KNIGHT.

HIS RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENTS AS CHAPTER COMMANDER OF CALAMBA CHAPTER, LAGUNA; AS REGIONAL COMMANDER FOR SOUTHERN TAGALOG, AS PAST SUPREME COMMANDER (1994-1995) AND AS MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS, BROUGHT HONOR AND PRIDE TO THE ORDER.

HIS EXEMPLARY DEVOTION IN VARIOUS PATRIOTIC, CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS IS WORTHY OF EMULATION AND WE, HIS BROTHERS IN THE ORDER, ARE VERY PROUD OF HIM AND HIS OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

HE IS A MAN OF GREAT HONOR AND VALOR YET VERY SOFT-SPOKEN. ONE OF HIS MOST NOTABLE RIZALIAN CONTRIBUTIONS WAS THE WRITING OF THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE BIRTHPLACE OF DR. JOSE RIZAL IN A BOOK ENTITLED: ‘CALAMBA – IN WAR AND PEACE.’

DURING HIS TERM AS SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE ORDER, 33 NEW CHAPTERS WERE FOUNDED, 23 IN THE PHILIPPINES AND 9 IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.

WITH HIS INSPIRATION, THE KABATAANG PANGARAP NI RIZAL OR KAPARIZ HELD ITS FIRST NATIONAL CONGRESS IN TORIL, DAVAO CITY ON APRIL 11-15, 1994.

PERSONALLY, I FOUND HIM TO BE A WARM AND GENEROUS FRIEND. I REMEMBER THE WORDS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON FIRST PRESIDENT OF US (1732 – 1799) :

“BE COURTEOUS TO ALL, BUT INTIMATE WITH FEW, AND LET THOSE FEW BE WELL TRIED BEFORE YOU GIVE THEM YOUR CONFIDENCE. TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS A PLANT OF SLOW GROWTH, AND MUST UNDERGO AND WITHSTAND THE SHOCKS OF ADVERSITY BEFORE IT IS ENTITLED TO THE APPELLATION.“

SIR DEMET IS A WELL-TRUSTED FRIEND AND COMRADE. AS WALTER WINCHELL SAID “A REAL FRIEND IS ONE WHO WALKS IN WHEN THE REST OF THE WORLD WALKS OUT. “ AND SIR DEMET IS ONE SUCH FRIEND. WE SHALL SURELY MISS HIS COMPANY, BUT I AM CONSOLED WITH THE FACT THAT HIS PATRIOTIC DEEDS AND THOUGHTS WILL BE AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL OF US, KNIGHTS OF RIZAL TO CARRY ON.

NON OMNIS MORIAR !
(NOT EVERYTHING IN ME SHALL DIE!)

SIR CARMELO T. GEMPESAW, KGCR
PAST SUPREME COMMANDER (2003-2005)
MEMBER, COUNCIL OF ELDERS

CALAMBA CITY — A septuagenarian lawyer was shot dead by two bonnet-wearing men on board a motorcycle in front of his law office in Barangay Poblacion this city on Saturday night, police said Sunday.

Supt. Roland Bustos, Calamba police chief, said victim Demetrio Hilbero, 70, a resident of Barangay Real in this city, was about to open the gate of his law office near the public market at around 7:45 p.m. when the assailants appeared and shot him several times at close range.

The gunmen immediately sped toward a still unknown direction after the shooting.

Concerned residents rushed the lawyer to the Calamba Medical Center where he later died while undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds in the different parts of the body.

Police recovered at least four bullet shells from a .45 pistol from the area.

Bustos said the victim and his wife Estela had just attended mass at the nearby St. John the Baptist Church when the killing happened.

He said the victim’s wife was in shock and had yet to give her statement to police investigators.

Bustos said the killing of Hilbero may have been caused by the cases he was handling at the time of his death.

He noted that despite his age, Hilbero was still active in his profession as lawyer.

“Because there’s a great possibility that the murder was related to the victim’s work as a lawyer, we will be going over the cases he had before he was killed,” Bustos told the INQUIRER.
