Rizal takes central part of Heroes Hall

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The monument of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal will occupy the central part of this city’s Heroes Hall. Mayor Oscar Rodriguez revealed this during the recent press conference for the 110th Independence Day celebration being organized by the City Government in cooperation with the different agencies here.

“This is to create consciousness, especially to the youth about being nationalistic. We are making Rizal as the center of attention here because he is our national hero,” said Rodriguez, adding that: “we should do away with being parochial.”

Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan, which was led by Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo.

He was a proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful means rather than by violent revolution. The general consensus among Rizal scholars, however, attributed his martyred death as the catalyst that precipitated the Philippine revolution.

Although his field of action lay in politics, Rizal’s real interests lay in the arts and sciences, in literature and in his profession as an ophthalmologist.

Shortly after his death, the Anthropological Society of Berlin met to honor him with a reading of a German translation of his farewell poem.

Rodriguez also lauded the members of the Knights of Rizal led by Reghis Romero for taking part in the construction of the said monument.

“We included the unveiling of the monument of Rizal at the Heroes Hall as part of our Independence Day celebration,” said the mayor.

He also said other monuments of the different heroes will also occupy their own spaces at the Heroes Hall.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez also disclosed the ongoing beautification of the heroes’ park where it will be open to the public even on weekends and holidays.
