Youth, women, global peace – focus of Rizal commemoration in Chicago

rizalchicago121212133.gifThe balagtasan staged by the Ateneo alumni readily was the audience favorite of last Dec. 30 marking of the 110th year of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal at the Rizal Heritage Center in Chicago but its theme about the involvement of the youth in Rizalism was the common mantra of the leaders of the different chapters of Order of the Knights of Rizal.

“The ideals of Rizal have to be passed to the new generations,” said a leader of the KOR who spoke for the rest of the officers in an interview with Don Tagala of ABS-CBN.

That along with the role of women in the KOR advocacy of global peace through Rizalism summed up the topics of the cultural numbers and speeches of the event.

Consul Roberto Bernardo pointed out that Rizal was reformer and a man adverse to violence and who, even in his exile in Dapitan, had put his service to his fellow Filipinos ahead of his personal welfare.

Central USA commander Boni Cenir will head a delegation next month to the International Conference of the KOR in Manila and will also go to Dapitan to work out the details of a project proposed by the Malaya Chapter head Mariano Santos who donated a school house to honor Rizal through the Gawad Kalinga.

A Rizal Institute to be held in June and December for the area youth will also be undertaken by the Central USA KOR.
